How to get an ADHD diagnosis in the UK (adults, 2026)

Updated June 2026 · England

Getting an adult ADHD diagnosis in the UK in 2026 is harder than it should be — but not because the process is complicated. It's because most people don't know the five steps. Here they are.

Step 1 — Self-screen with the ASRS-v1.1

The ASRS-v1.1 is the WHO-validated screening tool every NHS GP recognises. Five questions, two minutes. If you score 14+, you're in the range where a formal assessment is warranted.

Step 2 — Choose your route

For most adults, Right to Choose is the answer.

Step 3 — Book the GP appointment

Book a double appointment if your surgery allows it. Bring three things: a completed ASRS-v1.1 form, a personalised consultation script, and a referral letter naming your chosen Right to Choose provider. Walk in and say: "I'd like to be referred for an NHS ADHD assessment under Right to Choose, to [provider]."

Step 4 — Handle pushback (if any)

Some GPs will hesitate. Funding pressure and ICB caps are not valid reasons to refuse a Right to Choose referral. Only specific clinical grounds are. If pushed back, calmly read out the refusal response script (or hand it over). If still refused, escalate via PALS.

Step 5 — The assessment and after

The provider sends you screening questionnaires, then a structured clinical interview (1–2 hours, by video). If diagnosed, they'll begin titration — finding the right medication and dose. After titration the provider can hand prescribing back to your GP via a Shared Care Agreement.

What if my GP refuses Shared Care?

Some GPs decline Shared Care, meaning you'd have to pay for private prescriptions long-term. Check with your GP before the referral if you can. If they refuse, you can switch GP surgery, or your provider will continue prescribing (sometimes at a fee).
